The Buzz at Blocc – Laura

Each month we ask one of the Blocc team members to tell us a little bit more about themselves. This month we’d like to introduce you to Laura!

Name:
Laura Kemp

Position:
Junior Interior Designer

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?
There have been so many people that have influenced me over the years who I’ve learnt so much from. But right now, my design boss Jane hugely influences and inspires me. She really helps me push the boundaries and explore the limits of where we can take designs for show homes.

What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?
I’d say I’m proactive rather than reactive (one of my old bosses favourite sayings!) I try to identify any problems that might arise before they happen so the overall process runs smoother. I also ask a lot of questions to make sure I have as much information as I can – which might be annoying for some, but it’s better to ask than to make a mistake.

What was your first job?
Being the tea girl at a local hairdresser. I used to earn practically pennies but I loved earning my own money and doing anything to buy myself a new top from Topshop!

What led you to this career?
I’ve loved art and creativity as a child, then as a teenager while taking my exams my dream was to be an Interior Designer. After college however, I pursued a career in Visual Merchandising specialising in Window Displays for a Fashion Retailer. Then a few years ago I decided to follow my passion and jump into the Interior Design world. So I went on to study Professional Interior Design, joined a small company as a Design Studio Assistant and now here I am, as Junior Designer for Blocc!

What inspires you at work?
My colleagues & my fellow designers for sure.

Colours and patterns I love?
At home I love warm neutrals of stone, greige, taupe with black and white, mixing loads of natural textures. But at work I love playing around with bold colours, statement prints, dark interiors & pushing the boundaries.

Favourite items for the home?
I’m going to sounds like a Lee Evans sketch but I love candles and cushions – and I love a good throw. Anything to make the house feel homely and cosy!

What was the last movie you went to see? And what did you think?
I went to see Dune in IMAX with my husband and it was another level. The best film I’ve seen for a really long time & I’m a bit of a sci-fi nerd.

What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?
A good brew when I get home and a cuddle from our cocker spaniel.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
I would love to live in New York, if my husband had his way we would have moved there several years ago. We’ve been quite a few times over the years and still love going.

What is your favourite thing about Winter?
Winter clothes! I love coats, wearing layers, chunky boots – a big coat and sunglasses is my favourite combo.
